Cabinet Shakeup: Indonesia’s Finance Minister Replaced Amid Unrest
On Monday, September 8, President Prabowo Subianto will officially swear in a new Minister of Finance to replace Sri Mulyani Indrawati, as announced by State Secretariat Minister Prasetyo Hadi during a press briefing at the presidential palace.
This cabinet reshuffle is part of a broader change affecting five existing ministries, including: the Coordinating Ministry for Politics and Security, Migrant Workers’ Protection, Cooperatives, and the Youth & Sports Ministry. Additionally, a new ministry for Hajj and Umrah will be formed.
Sri Mulyani, who has served as Indonesia’s Finance Minister since 2016 under three presidents, has been at the center of recent protests. The public outcry stemmed from austerity policies and taxation reforms perceived as burdensome, sparking nationwide unrest and even the looting of her Bintaro residence.
The government's move to reshuffle the cabinet and introduce a new finance chief comes as the nation grapples with economic and political tensions—heightened by public dissatisfaction and global attention.
